The Hughes Brothers have bucked the system once again with this unflinching and brutally honest "mackumentary" that examines a staple of many urban communities: the pimp. Comprised of skillfully conducted interviews with real-life pimps, and heavily peppered with film clips from blaxploitation movies of the '70s, American Pimp asserts that many stereotypes revolving around this segment of society are firmly grounded in truth. Opening with a montage of "the man" dissing pimp morality, the film jumps across several major U.S. cities to introduce some amazing characters with mesmerizing wardrobes and more gold than Fort Knox. One pimp, Bishop Don "Magic" Juan, gave up pimping for the ministry, another went into telemarketing. But all offer zero apologies for their choice of lifestyle. Sure to provoke, the film is bubbling over with nimble verbal gymnastics, whether visiting the Player's Ball (an annual pimp convention where stables of "ho's" are displayed) or allowing these self-promoting provocateurs center stage. Grab a bottle of Cristal and chill out on your favorite leopard-skin rug, for this is badder than a muhfuh.
