The 14 story anthology Alleys and Doorways: Stories of Queer Urban Fantasy, edited by Meredith Schwartz, contains some worthwhile reading. Although most of the writers are women only a single story, “The Steel Anniversary,” is about lesbians. Many of the tales are literally otherworldly, including “Everlasting” and “Path of Corruption,” the latter of which owes more than a little to the fantastic fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. Another story, the sexy “Picture Perfect,” owes a debt to an episode of The Twilight Zone. Among the more entertaining entries is “The Truth of Skin and Ink” which well portrays the eroticism inherent in the act of tattooing when two hot men are in intimate contact with each other. The wittily written “Were” (as in werewolf) is a somewhat different and humorous slant on the hoary old horror stories, introducing a less encountered kind of were---a were-rabbit. A strange dreamlike subway odyssey takes place in the aptly-named “Lost.” There are also a queer seer (“Underneath”), a magick-maker (“The Love Potion”), and a skryer, a person who uses objects like mirrors to see visions (“The Reflection of Love”). “Flight” is a poetic tale about a boy just entering puberty and his closely-held secret, and it is not that he is gay.
