Jonathon Pfister's life has settled into a maudlin existence since the death of Greg, his lover of seventeen years. But Greg's daughter Jeana has decided she's had enough, so she rents a small apartment in Vienna for him as a Father's Day present. Jonathon agrees to go, against his better judgment.
Surprisingly, Jonathon finds the change of scenery refreshing, and he even makes a young friend in Hans, his landlady's son. Then Hans's older brother returns home, and Jonathon begins to truly awaken. Fabian touches something inside him, especially when the younger man takes it upon himself to woo Jonathon in full Viennese style, with a waltz. But shadows of the past and expectations for the future loom over them both and will have to be banished for their lovers' dance to stay in step.
Accompanied by a Waltz by Andrew Grey is another great story of loss and new love. Grey sets the stage with the relationship of Greg and Jonathon, lovers for seventeen years. Suddenly, Greg dies and Jonathon is alone, left to cope with the family drama and the fallout of having lost his true love.
The realism of the drama that comes with family fights over estates, exes dragging the widower into court, all the while the bereaved has to cope with his loss are all too real in the lives of many gay men. Luckily for Jonathon, not all the family is out to cause him pain and heartache and he finds an ally in Greg’s daughter Jeana. With Jena’s help, Jonathon moves on.
Grey is a masterful storyteller and brings together a great romance. What makes it such a good read is, as I said earlier, the realism - things that we might have dealt with at one time in our lives. He so effortlessly (seemingly) brings us into the lives of his characters and lets us experience the loss and love for ourselves. I found myself loving the scenic Viennese street scenes and culture. The language, the cuisine, the arts bring another dimension to the story, yet Grey adds so many deviations to the plot, yet he ties them together seamlessly. Another one that I couldn’t put down.
