A huge hit in Asia — and it’s easy to see why, as this is one of those movies that naturally generates feverish word-of-mouth from theater audiences. A Tale of Two Sisters is no doubt bound for a Hollywood remake, but you’re better off catching this finely crafted horror tale in its original form.

With seemingly infinite patience, Kap-su Kim presides over a highly dysfunctional family living in a lovely (yet very sinister) seaside house. Will he crack? Jung-ah Yum (Tell Me Something) is the wicked stepmother — or is she just having trouble dealing with a difficult situation? Su-jeong Lim is a resentful teenager, protective of younger sister Geun-yeong Mun, who seems sweet but a bit slow. But everyone is hiding deep secrets, and the most terrifying secret is being kept by the house itself!

Those who think they’re a step ahead because they’ve read Tom Tryon’s The Other will find several extra diabolical plot twists. Those confused as to what’s going on should be patient, as everything will be explained a few different ways by the end. And then, somehow, unexplained.
