Mistakenly billed as a comedy, this drama inspired by "Silas Marner" follows one hard-luck and heartbreaking story after another for the first 30 minutes or so. To start with, Martin finds out that the child his wife is expecting isn't his; then he moves to a small town where his fortune in gold coins is stolen; then a heroin addict dies in the snow outside his house. Only after the woman's young daughter wanders into Martin's home and life does the film lighten up. He adopts her and things are fine for years, until her real father (Byrne) decides to take her back, leading to an emotional ending.
