An excellent script distinguishes this rediscovered early treasure, director Sirk's first American film. Sanders' droll magnificence is well-served as the legendary (and reportedly real-life) 18th-century French rogue, Eugene François Vidocq, who realized that the best way to make crime pay was to become the chief of police! But, as fate (and artistic license) would have it, he is ultimately undone by love. (aka: Thieves' Holiday)
