Review

A marvelously entertaining baseball comedy, A League of Their Own is inspired by the real-life antics of the all-girls baseball league founded in 1943. Davis and Petty star as country-girl sisters who are discovered by ever-acerbic scout Lovitz. Whisked off to Chicago, they join the Rockford Peaches under the watchful bloodshot eyes of the team's over-the-hill, boozing manager (Hanks, who gives one of his richest characterizations). As the sisters whose sibling rivalry would make Joan Fontaine and Olivia deHavilland blush, Davis and Petty offer splendid performances. And it doesn't hurt that they look good in uniform and can handle a ball and glove. As she demonstrated in Big, director Marshall has a wonderful sense of comic timing, and she has crafted a sweet and funny valentine of a film.
