OK, true confession time here: I'm actually a big fan of really BAD horror movies. Also being a gay man, when I first discovered David DeCoteau's brand of campy, super-low-budget horror flicks - all featuring hunky college age guys spending a lot of time in just their white boxer briefs - I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The love affair with his films pretty much ended with "Beastly Boyz" (2006) which was - IMO - an insult to his fans. But I had to give him another look, when I heard about "1313: Giant Killer Bees!" and hoped I'd find something similar to another one of his creature features, "Leeches" (2003), which was my personal favorite.

The usual elements are here: an over-the-top horror plot (An experiment on a Caribbean island, looking to make honeybees more productive, accidentally results in giant mutant, zombie-creating bees!), about a half dozen great looking hunky young guys (mostly new faces), and rather tacky special effects (Not a dig, as this is part of the charm of his old films). What doesn't work is the execution, with scenes dragged out to a tedious and ridiculous length, seemingly to stretch a 30 minute story into the 80 minute run time. There are the usual - but here far too lengthy - scenes of a napping briefs-clad boy rubbing his body (from the waist up only, as per usual in his films), guys taking showers (but never using soap), and the one token female character (remaining fully clothed, even getting out of a bed in which she presumably had sex with one of the guys). Some of the extended scenes are shot with a "bee cam" which gets old very quickly. Listening to DeCoteau's commentary, even he seemed bored by this one, as he often ignored what was happening on the screen and droned on about other films, traveling, and how great it was to find so many scenic locations - which largely had noting to add to the film - there in Puerto Rico.

This is only one of a series of similar films, all titled with "1313" at the start of the title. This one would be rated PG, perhaps for mild erotic content and violence. Out of four stars, I'd average 4 (Eye Candy), 2 (Plot) and 1 (Execution) and give it two stars.

PS: DeCoteau has never represented that his films were meant to have a gay element (other than the ever-present male semi-nudity ... DUH!), and I'm sure that they also have fans among cougars and other fans of young male flesh. Still, it did feel like a bit of a slap in the face that the film poster and DVD cover specifies this is "A Science Fiction Chiller for Girls!" (Future film suggestion, David: "1313: Biting The Hand That Feeds You!")

Extremely boring movie. I had to prop open my eyelids to keep from falling asleep as the movie dragged on and on with no apparent end in sight. I'll grant you that the young men in the film have HOT bodies, but come on, a film needs to move to keep the audience's attention. This film drags along in slow motion and is to repetitive throughout to do anything but bore one to death.

If David DeCoteau is going to use the same mansion, and it looks like he is, for all his 1313 movies, with the same hall ways, the same swimming pool and the same crazy zombie like characters, he's going to dry up pretty fast.

This episode, like all of them, contain some hot guys in what looks like padded white boxer briefs so nothing is seen inside or to the side doing some lousy acting of some worse lines provided to them, walking slowly down the loooooooong upstairs hallway, or 7 minutes of carressing their chest, actually it is about 1 minute of carressing shown 7 times with never a hint of anything going on inside those boxer briefs.

But, the guys are nice to look at. Too bad they don't have more to do.

OK, I admit it.If I saw a guy as HOT as Carey James walking down the street my first thought would be " I wonder what he looks like shirtless". My second thought would be to follow him home and watch him through a window as he strips down to his undies, lies on a bed and strokes his chest and stomach. Unfortunately I would be discovered and arrested. Fortunately, however, there are filmmakers like David DeCoteau who provide this type of voyeuristic experience for viewing in the privacy of our own homes.
"GKB" is the most recent of Mr. DeCoteau's "Eye Candy" movies and he delivers the goods as always! Carey James really is Stunningly Beautiful and an Absolute Pleasure to watch. Derek North and the rest of the cast also look Fabulous as they wander around the Medical Complex waiting to be stung by the Bees and turned into boxer/brief wearing Zombies.
While it is obvious the budget of the film is not up to Hollywood Standards; I would much rather see a film that cost 100 Thousand Dollars and was pure bliss over something that cost 100 Million Dollars that is pure sh*t (like most Hollywood films).
Sure, Mr. DeCoteau's style of films is not for everyone; if you want "War And Peace" or "Titanic" look elsewhere. But if you are someone who just wants to kick back, smoke some "Medical Marijuana" and have a good time watching quality entertainment you can't do much better than this (but as the SyFy and Chiller channels prove you can do much worse, much much worse!).

I saw this on movie on demand. I can't begin to tell you how bloody awful this movie was but I am going to certainly try. This review will contain some **SPOILER ALERTS**!

If you are given only 80 minutes left to live, watch this movie--it'll be the longest 80 minutes of your life!!

Here's the simple plot of the movie. (I'll get that out of the way first so I can fill you in on the details.) The honeybee population of the world is depleting and research is going on to make hardier bees. But the research isn't going fast enought for the investors. So they plant a mole (Derek North) to introduce a substance garnered from a meteor (I'm not making this up) to the bees research to speed up the progress of the research and toughen up the bees. Needless to say, the substance causes the bees to mutate into GIANT KILLER BEES!

The first indication that this was going to be a train wreck was one of the opening scenes where our hero (?) was approaching the research facility (it looked like an abandoned prison from the outside). Minute after minute drug by as we watched this guy walk to the research facility. Of the 80 minutes this film ran, this walk must have consumed 10 % of the film. Once at the facility he is introduced to the research team who are mostly composed of well-toned guys who seem to be interested in everything but research.

We see two guys playing soccer who decide to head inside to their rooms to catch a shower. One of the guys heads for the shower, the other heads to his room to cool off. While in his room, he strips down to nothing more than some too-tight-to-be-comfortable tighty-whities, lies on the bed and begins to caress his torso. The production values on this film was clearly shown here: the guy had socks that kept disappearing and reappearing on his feet as he caressed himself for over 10 minutes. And you could tell that the scene was looped, you could tell where and when he was going to rub next. Despite a very promising bulge in the whities, his caressing hands never went below his wasteline. All while he was caressing himself, a mutated bee was watching him. Mind you, these mutated bees were as big as housecats yet he could not hear it buzzing or see it spying on him through the open patio door. Eventually (or finally, I should say) he jumps out the bed and is stung by the bee. He becomes a zombie!

The next scene is of the guy showering. Sparing you the details of his actions, suffice it to say it lasted as long as the bed caressing scene with no visual payoff below the belt. The only thing that made this scene worse than the previous one was that it was interspersed with Mr. New Zombie making his way to the shower. We would get 5 minutes of shower scene, 5 minutes of Mr. New Zombie's tight buns stiffly walking toward the bathroom (this guy looked as though he was isometrically flexing his buttcheeks as he walked), and back and forth for about 20 minutes. Mr. Zombie makes it to the shower and lazily caresses his buddy's back for a few minutes before biting him on the neck, turning him into a zombie. The next time we see Mr. Shower Guy Zombie, he apparently had the modesty to put on tighty-whities as well. Several more scenes of well-toned guys being turned into zombies follows.

The only time I thought this film may redeem itself turned out be a dream sequence where our mole was making out with the only girl on the premises (the lead researcher's girlfriend). As they were getting hot and heavy, the guy walks into the room in nothing but very well-stretched tighty-whities (if you know what I mean) and asks to join them. Alas, he awakes from the dream in bed with the girl. (He is in nothing but tighty-whities while she is still fully dressed in a top and jeans.)

Everyone in this movie dies from being infected and the movie ends with the bees escaping from the research facility and destroying the world.

The pretty boys could not save this movie. I suggest you not waste your time on this one. I suffered enough for everyone.

I was disappointed because I had always wanted to view a DeCoteau film. But if this is evidence of his filmmaking skills, I'll stick to old Ed Wood movies.
